Charcoal traders appeal to government for alternative source of livelihood

Charcoal producers in the Krachi West district of the Volta Region are appealing to the government to provide them with an alternative livelihood in order to stop the charcoal business. Ghana’s forest cover is depleting at a very fast rate due to illegal logging or indiscriminate cutting down of trees to produce charcoal.
The charcoal merchants themselves are also exposed to charcoal dust which leads to conditions such as chronic bronchitis. The Kete Krachi charcoal producers, mostly women, say they need help to acquire employment skills.
